It's no exaggeration...It's QUITE LITERAL!
Take notice - You will NEVER see more than 50% of any State road crew working at one time, and usually more like 25%. Take a look at all of the workers on the crew the next time you pass by road work and you will see a group of several guys leaning on shovels, or one foot up on something while they chat, a few guys sitting in the cabs of their trucks, and maybe one or two actually working. I've been noticing this for years. It's uncanny. How is this allowed? I've worked in construction of many different forms for many many years. I've seen a lot of slacking in my time, but nothing like a state road crew. It's kind of irritating when you realize that your tax dollars are paying their wages.

You are entirely CORRECT! I've been aware of this myself for many years.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I've noticed is that in order to be "inclusive" or for the sake of "diversity", the powers that be always make sure to have at least one lesbian working with the men on any state highway where construction is going on. She's usually one of the two persons at either end of the construction zone holding the signs that say "slow" or "stop".
Also, I am convinced that in most cases, there is really nothing at all (or very little) wrong with the roadway. They're only tearing it up in order to spend money budgeted for road work in order that their budget won't shrink the following year. (Did you ever see the movie "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas?)
Back when I worked at UCLA, this occurred annually. Toward the end of the fiscal year, all sorts of construction projects would pop up overnight on campus. It was various departments just wastefully spending money so they'd get the same amount of money, or more, for their budget the following year.
Yeah, this stuff ticks me off BIG TIME!

I know...that lesbian always scares me. I know I'm driving too fast past the 'slow' sign, and I'm afraid she's gonna hunt me down and slit my throat!
ReplyDeletep.s. - falling down is a fantastic movie! i've often wished that i had the opportunity to contribute to that movie.
ReplyDeleteI saw "Falling Down" when it first appeared in the theatres. There were certain scenes that I thought were tremendous and which made the movie memorable, but not necessarily great.
ReplyDeleteThen I rented it earlier this year and watched it for a second time and - with my increased awareness of societal conditions - became thrilled by it! I even altered my self-applied nickname to reflect my appreciation for that movie. The "D-Fens" in "D-FensDogg" is borrowed from the automobile license plate of the principal character in "Falling Down".
In fact, I've been meaning to post something on my 'Ferret-Faced Fascist Friends' blog about "Falling Down", and will undoubtedly do so before I close up shop on that blog at the end of this year. Glad to learn that you love "Falling Down" as much as I do.
